Digital Citizenship – Is it a schools responsibility?

on

Over this summer I have had conversations with multiple administrators concerned with digital citizenship. It appears that more and more incidents of bullying and harassment are using technology. Like anything else students must be taught skills, and what is right. ISTE updated the there standards in 2016 to include:

These standards appear to be a concert set of goals to start sharing with students on what a skills a proficient, moral online citizen would have.

Google recently published an phenomenal set of tools to use in the classroom to teach students how to be "Internet Awesome." This interactive Google site has the goal of providing students with the basic online skills so that they can explore the online world with confidence. Check out this tool at: https://beinternetawesome.withgoogle.com.

For older students Google published a site that includes lessons for Applied Digital Skills. This page contains comprehensive curriculum and lesson plans on projects for middle and heigh school students that include such things as: Planning an event, if-than stories, research and develop a topic and more.

It is critical as educators that we are aware that as we move into the digital setting we need to be developing digital citizens that have the fundamental skills to participate in a global online world. The great news thought is that we are not alone and there are free quality resources available as we enter this new frontier.
